Odisha eves bag National Rugby Sevens gold

Odisha eves bagged the gold medal in the Societe Generale Senior National Rugby Sevens Championship, drubbing West Bengal 22-0 in the final at Punjab University in Chandigarh today. Haryana bagged the men’s title, defeating Delhi in a thrilling of the three-day championship.

Odisha women marched into the final, hammering Dehi 24-0 and Maharashtra 15-10 in the quarterfinals and semifinals respectively. Earlier, Odisha eves blanked Andhra Pradesh 31-0 and Jammu-Kashmir 45-0 in Pool-I league to qualify for the last-eight stage.

However, Odisha men finished sixth after losing to Maharashtra 0-12 in the quarterfinals. Earlier, Odisha men trounced Punjab 12-0 and Manipur 31-0 in Pool G league to advance to the quarterfinals. As many as 25 men’s and 21 women’s teams participated in the championship. Odisha teams were accompanied by coach Manas Kumar Jena and assistant coach Dhiren Kumar Raut.
